Meet Joan Cashman: Founder of the Colour and Image Academy

Joan Cashman, the visionary behind the Colour and Image Academy, reflects on her journey from childhood aspirations to becoming a renowned figure in the fashion and beauty industry.

What did you want to be growing up when you were small?

As a child, I dreamed of being a princess, although some relatives had other ideas, humorously suggesting I’d make a good nun. While I played along and enjoyed the sweets they brought when they visited, my passion for fashion and makeup, which was evident in my childhood drawings, suggested a different path altogether.

Career progression

Throughout my upbringing, music was an integral part of my life, fostering countless memorable sessions in our household. At the age of nine, I embarked on my musical journey, learning to play the accordion. As a teenager, my brother and I formed a dynamic four-piece band, with me on keyboard and button accordion and John on bass and piano accordion, complemented by a live drummer and lead guitarist. Our performances garnered enthusiastic crowds, taking us on a whirlwind tour across the country, performing several nights a week, and entertaining at weddings on weekends.

Balancing my musical pursuits with professional responsibilities, I held two jobs simultaneously. By day, I managed accounts and credit control for a prominent Irish food corporation, while by night, I immersed myself in the vibrant music scene. However, upon starting a family, I made the decision to prioritise their upbringing and the family business, bidding farewell to both my day job and nighttime musical engagements. Yet, I found myself yearning for the lively atmosphere and an outlet for my creativity.

An unexpected turning point came when I had my colours done at the age of 18, unveiling a whole new world of possibilities. As my children began their schooling, I seized the opportunity to train with Colour Me Beautiful. Initially, I had no intentions of pursuing a career in image consulting, but my innate passion for helping others discover their true colours and how to put outfits together, was undeniable. Word quickly spread about my knack for advising people on what suited them best, laying the groundwork for a new chapter.

In 1995, a serendipitous encounter with a small studio in the Savoy Shopping Centre sparked the inception of my own venture. From the moment I opened the doors, bookings poured in, setting the stage for a remarkable journey. Year after year, I earned top international accolades with Colour Me Beautiful, culminating in the prestigious honour of heading the Irish division in 2000. Despite an already full plate, I embraced the role of international trainer, traversing the UK and Europe, an experience both humbling and exhilarating.

Witnessing the evolving landscape of the industry, I identified a niche for a comprehensive style and makeup school. Encouraged by my husband, I took the leap of faith to venture out on my own. In 2006, the Colour and Image Academy opened its doors on Cork’s Carey’s Lane, marking the beginning of an immensely fulfilling journey. At the academy, I have the privilege of nurturing talents, from fashion influencers and designers to beauty bloggers and boutique owners, empowering individuals with exceptional creative flair to chart their own paths.

The phone rings incessantly, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Each call represents an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, guiding them towards their true potential. As I reflect on the journey thus far, I am filled with gratitude for the countless lives touched and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Enjoyable aspects and motivations

It’s hard for me to pick just one thing I enjoy the most about my job. I love making people feel good about themselves and giving them the confidence to make positive changes in their careers and personal lives. It’s truly heartwarming to receive cards and messages from happy clients thanking me for my work and sharing their personal stories with me.

One of the things that I really enjoy about my job is the variety it offers. One day, I might be styling the front-of-house hotel employees, while the next day, I could be hosting style nights or hen parties. The following week, I might be running my training courses, doing one-on-one private consultations, training personnel for large department stores, or running workshops on interview dressing in colleges and regional development centres. The list is endless, and I love that no two days are the same. It keeps my work exciting and fresh, and I find it immensely satisfying to help people in different ways.

What inspires you?

I am incredibly enthusiastic about my work; it consumes my thoughts and drives me to strive for improvement constantly. As Diane Von Furstenberg once said, “The best gift you can give anybody is to inspire confidence.” That is precisely what I aim to do every day. I take pride in assisting women and men alike in maximising their potential by providing them with the guidance and confidence they need to succeed, step by step.

If you could advise your 15-year-old self, what would it be?

Don’t be so self-conscious, and don’t worry so much. You are enough!

What would you be doing if you weren’t in your current job?

I can’t even imagine! It would have to be something creative, though.

What is your greatest achievement in life or career thus far?

Personally, I feel proud of maintaining a happy family life and raising two wonderful children who have become successful adults themselves. Career-wise, opening my own academy is my greatest achievement, along with the international awards and recognition I’ve received over the years for my contributions to the industry.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

My mother. She had immense strength and resilience, always motivating me and supporting me.

What is your current life dream?

Do you have any regrets?

I can play some great tunes on the accordion when the mood strikes, and I’m also passionate about cooking.

What’s something interesting that we might be surprised to know about you?

Would you like to add anything else to the discussion?
