It can sometimes be an impulse decision, we see the fab new look on our favourite celebrity or Instagrammer, and suddenly, we’re googling like mad in the hopes of finding something similar online.
As a personal stylist, it’s hard for me, especially when I’m constantly searching for new items for my clients online, not to randomly spot the most gorgeous coat, which causes me to lose complete control and add to cart. I think we’re all a little guilty of that bad habit though.
And here we go again. Now with the new season crop of trends hitting the shops, we can already feel the pressure to purchase in case we look out of date.
Well, for this Autumn Winter, I want you to look back into your own wardrobes first because the good news is, you may already have many of these hot trends lying dormant like forgotten relics in your pre-pandemic closet. So here is my list to get you over the next few months.
Save your wallet! Save the planet!
So the question then is, how do we reinvent these pieces to make them fresh and fashionable.
BUTTON DOWNS
Since this piece is essentially considered the ultimate wardrobe staple. You’re likely to have plenty of those lying around, right? Well, make it your go-to layer.
How to wear it
The possibilities are endless. Make it the foundation of your look by layered it under knit sweater vests, blazers, denim jackets, you name it!
TROUSERS
Oversize ‘work pants’ AKA trousers have taken the place of the lounge pants.
How to wear it
For an off duty look, you can pair your pants with mannish brogues or sturdy loafers. Or dress them up with a waistcoat and heels for a night out.
3 PIECE SUITS
The 1990s are back! Designers are modernising the 3-piece suit, giving it a gender-neutral spin. Of course, the minute we hear 3-piece suits, we immediately think of suit jackets and waistcoats styled with pants or skirt.
But they are going all out this time, layer upon layer! The addition of the overcoat is now a big part of the equation. More is more this Autumn.
How to wear it
Three-piece suits tend to be monochromatic, herringbone or pinstripe. The new look is what you make it- classic, comfortable or professional.
But you can recreate your own look too. So, pull out your neutrals. Your favourite trousers, white shirt, blazer and coat, and there you have your monochromatic outfit done with a modern twist.
P.s. and if you happen to possess a faux fur coat from year’s back, now is your time to give it an airing! Faux fur is one of the hottest outwewear items this season!
And your outfit doesn’t have to match perfectly either. Play around with textures, like a bouclé style jacket; another twist to the tailoring silhouette that has taken the world by storm. You may well be able to resurrect one from the back of the wardrobe! Classy and fashionable for business and leisure, whilst the cut and shape emphasises your waist and compliments any figure.
CAPES AND PONCHOS
I’m glad they’re back. I have a navy Tommy Hilfiger cape in my wardrobe that I purchased well over 6 years ago now. It’s one excellent layering item to snuggle up in while dining outside this winter.
How to wear it
It looks classy with a monochrome ensemble and knee-high boots. Thanks to its baggy shape, you can cinch in your waist with a belt, let it hang loose, and add a bold accessory, such as a wide-brimmed hat or statement handbag.
KNIT DRESSES
The key word to describe fashion in the past year was cosy. Designers are continuing down this path for fall 2021, but the silhouette is much more tapered and sophisticated than what we’d typically expect. Indeed, cosy never looked as good. These flattering dresses have real staying power.
How to wear it
You can style this cosy jumper dress with everything from white trainers to block heels and autumn boots. It’s such a versatile item; you can dress it up or down for work and the weekend. They are what we call a transitional treasure.
MONOCHROMATIC DRESSING
Anyone and everyone is wearing monochromatic outfits. From couture to sweats, from inauguration day right through to fall 2021. I adore it! There’s just something about having a completely matching outfit and rocking the colour head-to-toe; it’s a win-win way to dress.
How to wear it
You can pair sweatshirt and sweatpants with a trench and sneakers, a slip skirt, with jumper and boots, or trousers and oversized sweater. Remember, you will look slimmer and taller running the same colour up and down the body, and that’s the best recipe for style in my book. BUT do add a colourful or patterned accent to make it catchier.
BRIGHT SATURATED COLOUR POP ALL OVER
Once the sunshine goes and the biting chill hits the air, we’re often tempted to reach for our dark neutrals to blend in a bit more. But since the World has been inside for months on end this season we’re aching for a pop of colour. It’s all about bright, vibrant, bold hues to inject a bit of life into our wardrobes and brighten our day.
The key colours that will distract us from getting the winter blues are yellow, orange, pink, lavender, fire engine red, fuchsia, green, clay and warm browns
How to wear it
Allow one colour to stand out. For example, if it’s a fuchsia jacket or coat you plan on wearing, go muted with your shoes and the rest of your look.
KNEE-HIGH BOOTS
Mid-calf and knee-high boots are back! This season’s silhouette is all about power.
How to wear it
Go big or go home. Go for suede or luxury textures. These knee-high boots look great with the new tuxedo dresses and baby doll silhouettes for those young enough to wear the micro-mini. For the rest of us there’s nothing like knee-highs to toughen up your basic fall outfit.
